Bupa completes acquisition of leading care home business in Australia and New Zealand

18 December 2007

Bupa today announced it has completed the acquisition of the Amity Group in Australia and Guardian Health Care in New Zealand.

Bupa announced an agreement to acquire the controlling interest in the DCA Agedcare Group from DIAC Holdings in October. It has now received all necessary approvals from Australian and New Zealand regulators.

Together Amity and Guardian have 96 aged care homes, 7,000 aged care beds and a combined annual turnover of AU$328million. In addition, Guardian Health Care operates 15 residential villages and a personal medical alarm service supporting more than 12,500 customers across New Zealand.

They are leaders in their respective markets and will add to Bupa’s presence in the care for the elderly market. Bupa is already a leading player in Europe, with 21,000 beds in 303 UK care homes and 4,300 beds in 43 homes in Spain.

Managing Director of Bupa Care Services, Mark Ellerby, welcomed the conclusion of the transaction. He said: “Bupa is delighted with the opportunity to work with Amity and Guardian’s existing management to share world’s best practice and to build on the high standards of quality care in Australia and New Zealand.”

“Guardian and Amity have excellent facilities and management teams, which will enable us to continue delivering the same high standards of individual care as we do in our existing business.”
